The Signature Experience

Overview

Hello Travelers! Tucked between the Brahmaputra Valley on one side and the high mountain passes of Myanmar on the other, Nagaland is a small yet captivating mountainous state known for its unique and vibrant culture. The Naga tribes have a proud history, having fiercely defended India against the Japanese army during World War II, and several historical remnants around Kohima still echo those stories, making the region fascinating to explore. Dzukou Valley, often called the “Valley of Flowers” of the Northeast, is especially प्रसिद्ध for the rare Dzukou lily that blooms during the monsoon season. The valley’s breathtaking “mountain wave” landscape feels almost surreal—rolling hills stretching endlessly like a green ocean, creating a magical setting straight out of a fairy tale. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause and wonder how such natural beauty can even exist. Our journey begins from Dimapur Airport or Railway Station, from where we head to Khonoma, fondly known as the “Green Village.” A walk through this village offers a glimpse into the rich traditions and sustainable lifestyle of the Naga people. We then proceed to Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, often referred to as the land of tribes. After exploring key attractions in and around the town, we continue to Kisama village to experience the authentic cultural essence of Nagaland. Kisama holds special significance as the venue for the famous Hornbill Festival, celebrated with great enthusiasm during the first ten days of December each year. The highlight of the trip is undoubtedly the trek to Dzukou Valley. Situated at an altitude of around 9,000 feet above sea level, this stunning expanse of rolling hills covered with dwarf bamboo is a true feast for the senses. Fed by two flowing rivers, the valley offers mesmerizing views at every turn. After an initial challenging climb, the next couple of days are all about soaking in the serene beauty around you. Spending a night camping under a sky filled with millions of stars is truly an unforgettable experience. One thing is certain—you’ll return from this backpacking adventure with countless stories to tell. Let’s explore the hidden wonder of Northeast India—Nagaland!

Journey Roadmap

Get picked up from Dimapur Airport or Railway Station as per your arrival time and begin your journey towards the capital city of Nagaland. En route, stop for a quick lunch at a local restaurant before continuing the drive. Upon arrival at the beautiful green village of Khonoma, enjoy a guided walk through the village, where you may also witness a stunning sunset across the hills if you’re lucky. Later, check into a cozy village homestay, savor a delicious dinner served at the stay, and unwind with a restful night’s sleep.

Freshen up in the morning, enjoy breakfast, and check out of the stay before heading towards Kohima, the capital town of Nagaland. Here, visit the colorful Cathedral Church and the World War II Cemetery, where you’ll learn fascinating stories about the Japanese army’s advance through the Northeast and how the Nagas played a vital role in defending the region. Continue your journey to Kisama Heritage Village and explore it on foot. This culturally rich and mystical place beautifully showcases the traditions, architecture, and lifestyle of the Naga tribes. Kisama is also the venue for the vibrant Hornbill Festival held every December. As you walk through the village, you can explore unique architectural structures such as bamboo pavilions, traditional idols, and morungs—spaces where tribes practice and display skills like archery, arts, crafts, and other traditional activities. These structures come especially alive during the Hornbill Festival in early December. Later, head back to your homestay and, if the weather permits, gather around a cozy bonfire. Wind down your day with an early and hearty dinner before calling it a night.

The day we have been waiting for has arrived. Today we shall trek to the heavenly Dzukou valley from the village. Breakfast time. Our Dzukou cab along with our Dzukou Trek Guide will arrive by 8 AM. Note: Dzukou Valley doesn’t have mobile network. It is advised to carry some cash & pack some snacks. You may put your bigger backpacks at the Homestay and carry only the small backpack with essentials. Our guide will give individual sleeping bags to each trekker and our Porter will carry heavier tents. The initial part of the trek, around 2 hours of the mountain slope is steep and surrounded by rain forest. The locals have done a great job in maintaining the sanctity of the trail. Once we hike up the mountain, a completely new world appears in front of our eyes. Tens of rolling hills carpeted by dwarf bamboo trees welcome trekkers with a captivating views. This remaining part of trek of about 3 hours through the valley is relatively easy but long. The beauty of the valley will make trekkers forget everything else. We will reach base camp located at a magnificent setting at the other end and drop our bags in the tents once our care taker pitches the tents. After a well deserved hot black Tea, we will go to the Helipad for a beautiful sunset. Gear up for a very very cold night. Weather permits, locals may even arrange a bonfire. Have a basic but hot Dinner (self sponsored) before resting in your assigned tents.

Today we shall explore a Helipad and trek down the valley to reach breathtaking grasslands, pristine and cold flowing rivers, floating clouds that act as a crown to the majestic mountain peaks. This 3 Km trek down is icing on the cake of already unimaginable setting of the Dzukou valley After taking endless selfies, groupfies and Reels, we will finally trek up and have hot Lunch at our base camp Resume our trek along the hills, and finally hike down the rainforest of the mountain slope to reach back to Jakhama village. Our Dzukou vehicle will be waiting at the parking to pick tired and exhausted trekkers. Once we are dropped to the stay by late afternoon, there is no more activity planned for the day. Your body asks for rest after 2 days of trek and exploration. Finish Dinner and have a tight sleep.
